Lexicon

  • AFAB

    Acronym meaning "Assigned Female At Birth". This term is used for women who consider that they are not, and that their sex has been "assigned" to them at birth.

  • Agenre

    A person who does not identify with any gender identity or who does not have a gender identity.

  • AMAB

    Acronym meaning "Assigned Male At Birth". This term is used for men who believe that they are not, and that their sex was "assigned" to them at birth.

  • Binder

    A kind of compressive corset that flattens the chest of women who wish to pass for men. Wearing a binder can lead to lung problems and broken ribs.

  • Cisgenre

    Any person who is not "transgender" is referred to as "cisgender" by trans activists.

  • Cispassing or passing

    A term used by trans people to assess whether they are socially identified with the gender to which they wish to belong.

  • Dead name

    A "dead name" is the birth name of a person who has changed his or her name due to gender transition.

  • Detrans

    Said of a person who was trans, and who wishes to go back.

  • Dicklit

    Clitoris having increased in volume under the effect of a hormonal treatment (testosterone). This change is irreversible and can lead to chronic pain.

  • Gender dysphoria

    Gender dysphoria is the medical term that describes the distress that some trans people feel when they believe they are of the opposite sex and claim to be "born in the wrong body.

  • Gender expression

    This term is used by trans activists to describe the way a person expresses their gender identity.

  • Trans woman (or transfeminine male)

    Man who wishes to become a woman or thinks he is one.

  • Male trans woman (or male trans)

    Woman who wishes to become a man or who thinks she is one.

  • FtM

    Acronym meaning "Female To Male" and referring to women who are making a gender transition with the goal of becoming a man.

  • Gender-fluid

    Term from the Anglo-Saxon world, designating people of "fluid gender", i.e. whose gender identity fluctuates over time. Thus a gender-fluid person can be male in the morning, female at noon, and non-binary at night.

    Acronym meaning "Male to Female" and referring to men who are making a gender transition with the goal of becoming a woman.

  • Non-binary

    An umbrella term used to refer to a person who declares that they are neither male nor female (this term is subdivided into several categories: agenre, genderfluid, demigirl, demiboy, etc.).

  • Phalloplasty

    Surgical operation which consists in carrying out the ablation of the vulva of a woman who wishes to become a man. A (non-functional) organ in the shape of a penis will be created using a piece of skin usually taken from the forearm. The erection is possible thanks to the activation of a pump located in the former external lips remodeled in the shape of testicles.

  • Queer

    A term that refers to anyone who is not heterosexual or "cisgender".

  • Gender reassignment

    It is a surgical operation that consists of the removal of a healthy sexual organ, to reform a non-functional growth resembling that of the opposite sex.

  • TERF

    Acronym for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. This term is used by trans activists to refer to gender critical feminists. It is often accompanied by threats and insults.

  • Gender transition

    Period during which a trans person performs a certain number of acts in order to reach the gender expression corresponding to his or her gender identity: coming out, change of wardrobe, change of marital status, hormonal treatment, surgical operations, etc. However, it is not necessary to transition in order to be considered trans.

  • Transphobia

    Hostile, discriminatory attitude towards transsexual or transgender people.

  • Vaginoplasty

    Surgical operation that consists in the removal of the penis and testicles of a man who wishes to become a woman, and to create an orifice in the same place using a piece of intestine or the peritoneum of the person.
